Activated Carbon is Carbon which is treated and processed to have small, low-volume pores that boosts the available surface area for adsorption or chemical reactions. Just 1 gram of Activated Carbon has an external surface area of 3.000 m², because of its high degree of microporosity. For most applications the activation level of solely the high surface area is sufficient. However further chemical treatment (impregnation) of the Activated Carbon can enhance the adsorption properties.

Activated Carbon can be used for air emission control such as the removal of volatile organic components. Activated Carbon can also be applied for the removal of inorganics like heavy metals, hydrogen sulphide and ammonia. For water purification, the adsorbent is used for the removal of chloramine.
